Evacuation Tips: Emergency Action Plan

In compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, businesses are obligated to provide a safe working environment for their employees. At Allied Human Resources, we prioritize safety by conducting annual safety training sessions and regularly simulating emergency scenarios.

Recently, we conducted a drill to assess our staff's knowledge of evacuation procedures. We inquired about their designated assembly point in case of an emergency and their actions if management were unavailable. The positive response, including their commitment to taking accountability and communicating with team members, demonstrated a strong understanding of emergency protocols.

Several key considerations should be taken into account when developing an evacuation plan:

  1. Assembly Point Selection:

    • Avoid Parking Lots: Parking lots can pose significant risks during evacuations, including traffic congestion, potential hazards from abandoned vehicles, and proximity to potential blast zones.

    • Prioritize Distance and Structural Integrity: Identify assembly points that are a safe distance from the building and located within sturdy structures, such as nearby commercial buildings or designated community shelters.

  2. Extended Evacuation Periods:

    • Anticipate Delays: Evacuations can last several hours, encompassing response times for emergency services and the necessary time for a thorough assessment of the situation.

    • Mitigate Environmental Factors: Consider the potential impact of prolonged exposure to outdoor conditions, such as heat stress and dehydration. Implement measures to protect employees, such as providing hydration and shade.

Lessons from Recent Events

During the recent storm, the inconsistent guidance from government agencies highlighted the importance of clear and timely communication. While the initial directive was to shelter in place, subsequent information indicated that government offices would be open. This discrepancy led to confusion among employees.

Key Recommendations for Enhancing Workplace Safety:

  1. Develop a Comprehensive Emergency Action Plan: Create a detailed plan outlining procedures for various emergency scenarios, including evacuations, fires, and active shooter situations.

  2. Regularly Review and Update the Plan: Conduct periodic reviews to ensure the plan remains current and effective, especially after significant events or changes in the workplace.

  3. Communicate the Plan Effectively: Clearly communicate the plan to all employees, using multiple methods such as training sessions, written materials, and regular reminders.

  4. Conduct Drills and Simulations: Regularly practice emergency procedures to reinforce employee knowledge and identify areas for improvement.

  5. Establish a Safety Committee: Form a safety committee composed of representatives from management and employees to oversee safety initiatives, conduct inspections, and investigate incidents.

By implementing these recommendations and maintaining a strong commitment to safety, we can significantly reduce the risk of harm to our employees and create a more secure workplace.
